Maintained its annual sales forecast on Thursday, signaling confidence in its long-term growth strategy even as geopolitical tensions and cautious consumer spending continued to weigh on demand for apparel and accessories.
The retailer said it still expects full-year comparable sales to rise in the mid-single-digit percentage range, reaffirming guidance despite a challenging retail environment marked by persistent economic uncertainty and shifting consumer behavior.
The company, known for its American Eagle and Aerie brands, has been navigating softer discretionary spending as shoppers remain selective about purchases amid elevated living costs and concerns about the broader global economy. Executives said customers continue to prioritize value and essentials, making competition across the apparel industry increasingly intense.
Retailers across the United States have faced uneven demand in recent quarters as inflation pressures, higher borrowing costs and geopolitical instability have affected consumer confidence. Many shoppers have reduced spending on non-essential fashion items, forcing clothing chains to rely more heavily on promotions and targeted marketing campaigns to drive traffic.
Despite those pressures, American Eagle has continued to benefit from strength in several core categories, particularly activewear, denim and intimates. The company’s Aerie brand has remained a key growth engine, attracting younger consumers with a focus on comfort-focused apparel and inclusive marketing campaigns.
Industry analysts said maintaining its forecast could indicate the retailer is seeing stabilization in customer demand after a volatile start to the year. However, investors remain cautious about whether apparel companies can sustain growth momentum if economic conditions deteriorate further during the second half of the year.
The retail sector has also been grappling with supply chain adjustments and uncertainty surrounding global trade policies, which have complicated inventory planning and increased operational risks for companies dependent on international sourcing.
American Eagle has been working to manage costs while improving inventory efficiency, a strategy that has helped several apparel retailers avoid the heavy markdowns that hurt profitability during previous periods of slowing demand.
Shares of apparel retailers have experienced increased volatility in recent months as Wall Street closely monitors signs of consumer weakness. Investors are particularly focused on whether back-to-school shopping and holiday demand will provide enough momentum to support earnings growth later this year.
Company executives said they remain focused on balancing promotional activity with profitability while continuing investments in digital operations, store optimization and customer engagement initiatives aimed at younger shoppers.
The retailer’s decision to reaffirm its annual outlook suggests management believes its brand positioning and merchandising strategy can help weather continued economic uncertainty, even as consumers remain cautious with discretionary spending.
