TOWN OF NEWBURGH – When Beacon City Police received a call of a man standing on the fence of the pedestrian walkway of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge close to the Newburgh side, they snapped into action.

The officers found the man on the eastbound span, standing on the top rung of the fence overlooking the river.

He was speaking to a female passerby, who stopped to try to assist him as he was saying he wanted to kill himself.

The Beacon officers quickly took hold of the man and brought him down off the fence to safety.

Officers from the Town of Newburgh arrived and the man was turned over to them for mental health evaluation.

Beacon Police Chief Thomas Figlia said that while the bridge is not patrolled by his department, when calls of that nature come in, they respond due to their proximity.

If anyone is struggling with thoughts of suicide, the chief said they should call the state suicide and crisis lifeline at 988.
