During Tuesday’s episode of the ABC talk show The View, Chris Murphy strongly criticized the ongoing military conflict involving the United States and Iran, warning that the longer the war continues, the more dangerous and costly it becomes for America.
Speaking with co-host Joy Behar, Murphy argued that each additional day of fighting weakens the United States while giving Iran more opportunities to gain strength politically, economically, and militarily.
Behar referenced the mixed messages coming from Donald Trump over the weekend regarding a possible peace agreement with Iran. According to her, Trump claimed that negotiations toward a deal were largely complete and suggested that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz would remain open. However, at the same time, the administration reportedly carried out new military strikes in southern Iran, raising questions about whether the conflict was truly nearing an end.
Responding to the discussion, Murphy said he wants the war to end “as soon as possible,” emphasizing the heavy toll the conflict has already taken on American families, military personnel, and the nation’s economy.
“Every single day that this war continues, the country gets weaker, Iran gets stronger,” Murphy said during the interview. He stressed that prolonged warfare only increases instability and deepens suffering both abroad and at home.
The Connecticut senator also criticized what he described as the administration’s contradictory approach to dealing with Iran. Murphy argued that the emerging proposal being discussed sounded less like a strategic victory and more like an expensive attempt to restore conditions that existed before the conflict began.
According to Murphy, the administration now appears willing to ease sanctions and potentially provide Iran with billions of dollars in economic relief just to secure outcomes that were already in place before military action escalated. He pointed specifically to the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes — noting that it had remained open before the war intensified.
“We didn’t have to go through all this misery if the goal was simply to keep the Strait of Hormuz open,” Murphy argued.
Despite his criticism of the proposed agreement, Murphy admitted he would still support efforts to end the conflict quickly if it meant preventing further American casualties and reducing the financial burden on the country.
He said bringing U.S. troops home should now be the top priority and warned against risking additional American lives in a prolonged Middle East conflict.
“We shouldn’t lose a single additional American,” Murphy stated, adding that the United States has already spent enormous amounts of money on the war while Americans continue to struggle with rising costs, including higher gas prices linked to instability in global oil markets.
Murphy’s comments reflect growing debate in Washington over the effectiveness of the administration’s Iran strategy, with critics questioning whether the military campaign has produced meaningful gains or simply increased tensions in the region. Supporters of the administration, however, argue that maintaining military pressure is necessary to protect U.S. interests and prevent Iran from expanding its influence.
As diplomatic talks continue alongside military operations, uncertainty remains over whether a lasting agreement can be reached or if the conflict will continue to escalate in the coming weeks.
