Iran is seeking access to approximately $24 billion in funds frozen overseas as part of a potential agreement being negotiated with the United States, according to a Tuesday report from Iran’s Tasnim news agency.
Tasnim cited a source close to Tehran’s negotiating team who said the release of the money must be included under a memorandum of understanding currently being discussed with Washington.
The report said Iran’s top negotiator, Mohammad Baqr Qalibaf, traveled to Qatar as part of efforts to establish a mechanism for carrying out the demand.
The discussions center on how the frozen Iranian funds could be released if the two sides move forward with the proposed understanding. The report did not provide additional details on the location of the funds, the terms under consideration, or the broader scope of the negotiations.
Qatar has previously served as a diplomatic venue for indirect contacts involving Iran and the United States. In this case, Tasnim reported that Qalibaf’s visit was tied specifically to reaching agreement on the process for implementing Iran’s demand for the release of the frozen assets.
The reported request places financial sanctions relief at the center of the potential arrangement. Iran has long sought access to funds held abroad, while the United States has used financial restrictions as leverage in disputes involving Tehran’s nuclear program, regional activity and broader security concerns.
Neither the reported memorandum of understanding nor any final mechanism for releasing the funds has been publicly announced.
