NORTH SALEM- A 30-year-old North Salem man faces some two dozen charges of forgery and larceny for allegedly altering a paycheck and depositing it multiple times in banks in New York and Connecticut.
Daniel Nitkin was arraigned in Danbury Superior Court following a police investigation into a 2023 complaint filed by his former employer.
The owner of Tequila Escape in Ridgefield, Conn. filed the complaint accusing Nikitin, who was formerly employed at the Mexican restaurant, of check fraud.
Following Nikitin’s cashing of his last paycheck in February 2023, the warrant reports that the complainant received notice showing the same check had been deposited multiple times. The restaurant owner told police that the check numbers appeared to have been altered, and that he tried to reach Nikitin about it but was unable to make contact.
Authorities obtained documents showing 11 checks for the same amount were deposited into a Citibank savings account between Feb. 10 and Feb. 16, 2023.
After each deposit, a bank statement showed the funds were transferred to a linked checking account and “utilized for debit card purchases and ATM withdrawals.”
Although Nikitin’s arrest warrant was issued in October 2023, he was not detained until the beginning of this month.
According to Ridgefield police, Nikitin was taken into custody following a traffic stop in Lewisboro, where officers found there was an outstanding arrest warrant for him.
After his arraignment, he was sent back to Connecticut, posted a $25,000 bond, and was released until his hearing in Danbury later this month.
