President Donald Trump renewed discussion over Greenland and the United States’ growing Arctic interests on Saturday after sharing a Truth Social post featuring an image of himself overlooking snow-covered mountains toward Greenland alongside the caption, “Hello Greenland.”

The message came as tensions continued to rise in Greenland following the recent opening of a new American consulate in Nuuk and a visit by Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, a Trump ally whose trip drew criticism from local activists and residents.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered Friday outside the newly opened U.S. diplomatic facility in Nuuk, protesting what they described as increasing American pressure and influence over the Arctic territory. Protesters chanted “Greenland is for Greenlanders” while expressing opposition to Washington’s expanding presence on the island.

Protest organizer Aqqalukkuluk Fontain told the BBC that Greenland’s leadership had already communicated its position regarding U.S. overtures.

“In a democratic world, no means no,” Fontain said.

The demonstrations followed Landry’s three-day visit to Greenland, which critics noted occurred without a formal invitation from Greenlandic authorities. During the trip, Landry reportedly met with local officials and business leaders and suggested Greenland could prosper independently.

Greenland remains a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, though the island maintains control over many domestic affairs while Copenhagen oversees foreign and defense policy.

The expanded American consulate in Nuuk has become a focal point in the dispute. The approximately 3,000-square-meter facility has reportedly been nicknamed “Trump Towers” by some local residents as concerns grow over increasing U.S. involvement in the Arctic region.

The Trump administration has repeatedly argued that Greenland holds major strategic importance because of its Arctic location, natural resources, and proximity to key military and shipping routes.

Trump previously generated international controversy during his first administration after publicly expressing interest in purchasing Greenland from Denmark, a proposal Danish and Greenlandic officials rejected at the time.

Although Saturday’s social media post appeared brief and informal, it renewed attention on the administration’s continued interest in Greenland amid ongoing concerns among some residents about American diplomatic expansion and geopolitical ambitions in the Arctic.
