Tulsi Gabbard is resigning from her position as Director of National Intelligence after informing President Donald Trump that she will leave public service to care for her husband during his fight against a rare form of bone cancer.

According to an exclusive report from Fox News, Gabbard notified Trump of her decision during a meeting Friday in the Oval Office. Her final day leading the Office of the Director of National Intelligence is expected to be June 30.

Fox News reported that Gabbard submitted a formal resignation letter to the president explaining that her husband, Abraham, had recently been diagnosed with “an extremely rare form of bone cancer.”

In the letter, Gabbard expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve in the administration.

“I am deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me and for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for the last year and a half,” she wrote.

“Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026,” Gabbard continued. “My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.”

She said her husband faces major medical challenges in the months ahead and explained that she could no longer continue in government service while supporting him through treatment.

“At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle,” Gabbard wrote.

The outgoing intelligence chief also reflected on her marriage and her husband’s support throughout her military and political career.

“Abraham has been my rock throughout our eleven years of marriage — standing steadfast through my deployment to East Africa on a Joint Special Operations mission, multiple political campaigns and now my service in this role,” she wrote.

Gabbard later publicly acknowledged her resignation in a statement posted to X and Truth Social.

“Today, with great humility and sincere appreciation, I shared the below letter with President Trump,” she said. “It has been a profound honor to serve the American people as DNI.”

President Trump released a statement on her resignation:

Unfortunately, after having done a great job, Tulsi Gabbard will be leaving the Administration on June 30th. Her wonderful husband, Abraham, has been recently diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer, and she, rightfully, wants to be with him, bringing him back to good health as they currently fight a tough battle together. I have no doubt he will soon be better than ever. Tulsi has done an incredible job, and we will miss her. Her highly respected Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, Aaron Lukas, will serve as Acting Director of National Intelligence. President DONALD J. TRUMP

Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii and military veteran, joined the Trump administration after shifting politically toward the Republican Party and becoming one of Trump’s most prominent national security allies.

Her tenure as Director of National Intelligence placed her in charge of coordinating America’s intelligence agencies and advising the president on national security threats, foreign intelligence, and counterterrorism operations.

The administration has not yet publicly announced who will replace Gabbard following her departure at the end of next month.
