KINGSTON – All 24 people who spoke at a public hearing conducted by the Ulster County Legislature Tuesday night support a proposed local law that would require all police to be unmasked and identify themselves.

The measure is in response to federal ICE agents terrorizing residents in communities in the Hudson Valley and across the country.

Amy Friedman, who spoke, told how upset she is having been a resident of Minneapolis and the actions of masked ICE agents who killed two people.

“We’ve seen very clearly what allowing ICE to operate anonymously without any legal recourse we saw in Minneapolis, and I don’t think any of us want to see that here. We do not want to see the culture of terror, and we certainly don’t want to see any murders in New York,” she said.

Two other women said they patrol their neighborhoods conducting “ICE watches,” as they look for masked agents.

The county legislature took no action on the proposal during Tuesday night’s session.
