Meta is shifting approximately 7,000 employees into artificial intelligence-related positions while simultaneously preparing to eliminate around 8,000 jobs as part of a major internal restructuring effort centered on AI development, according to a Bloomberg report.
The reorganization reflects CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s intensifying focus on artificial intelligence as the company competes against firms including OpenAI and Google in the race to dominate next-generation AI technologies.
According to an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg, Meta plans to consolidate operations around AI-focused products and infrastructure, including autonomous agents, artificial intelligence applications and engineering systems designed to support expanded machine-learning capabilities.
The internal restructuring was outlined in a message from Chief People Officer Janelle Gale, who described the changes as part of a broader effort to create a leaner and more decentralized corporate structure.
The company intends to build what Gale characterized as a “flatter” organization with smaller teams capable of operating more independently and responding faster to product development demands.
“We believe this will make us more productive and make the work more rewarding,” Gale wrote in the memo.
Meta has dramatically increased spending on artificial intelligence over the past year, directing billions of dollars toward data centers, computing infrastructure and specialized engineering talent.
The company has also been encouraging employees to integrate AI tools into everyday workflows, including software development and coding operations.
The shift comes amid escalating competition among major technology firms attempting to secure dominance in generative AI systems, advanced language models and AI-powered consumer applications.
Zuckerberg has repeatedly identified artificial intelligence as Meta’s top strategic priority, arguing the technology will shape the company’s future products, advertising systems and long-term business model.
The restructuring effort is also tied to broader cost-cutting measures aimed at financing Meta’s expanding AI investments.
The company plans to reduce roughly 10 percent of its overall workforce during the current restructuring phase, according to the report.
Employees in North America were reportedly instructed to work remotely last Wednesday as the layoffs began rolling out in stages across various divisions.
The latest cuts continue a broader trend across the technology sector, where companies are simultaneously investing heavily in artificial intelligence while reducing staffing in areas considered less central to future AI-driven operations.
Industry analysts have noted that many large technology firms are increasingly redirecting resources away from traditional business units toward machine-learning infrastructure, cloud computing capacity and automated software development tools.
Meta’s restructuring also highlights how rapidly AI initiatives are reshaping hiring priorities and organizational structures throughout Silicon Valley as companies compete for leadership in the expanding artificial intelligence market.
