WASHINGTON — Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania is once again breaking with members of his own party after publicly defending President Donald Trump’s hardline stance on Iran and supporting efforts to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Fetterman made the comments during recent interviews and public appearances surrounding escalating tensions involving Iran, arguing that he “fundamentally” agrees Iran should never be allowed to acquire a nuclear bomb.

The Pennsylvania senator has increasingly separated himself from progressive Democrats on foreign policy issues, particularly regarding military action and U.S. support for Israel.

During recent debate surrounding Trump’s handling of Iran, Fetterman defended the administration’s position and criticized lawmakers opposing aggressive measures aimed at stopping Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

“I fundamentally believe that Iran should never acquire a nuclear bomb,” Fetterman said while discussing the growing conflict and Trump’s policies toward the Iranian regime.

Fetterman also sided with Republicans during a Senate vote involving a war powers resolution that sought to limit Trump’s authority for continued military action involving Iran. The resolution ultimately failed after Fetterman joined Republicans in opposition.

The senator’s support for Trump’s Iran policies has created additional tension with Democrats who have warned against expanded military involvement in the Middle East and criticized the administration’s handling of the conflict.

Several Democrats argued Congress should have greater oversight before additional military action involving Iran moves forward, while Republicans and Trump allies defended the president’s authority and national security strategy.

Fetterman has repeatedly positioned himself as one of the Democratic Party’s strongest supporters of Israel and one of its most hawkish voices on Iran, frequently criticizing progressive activists and lawmakers calling for de-escalation.

Political analysts say Fetterman’s willingness to publicly align with Trump on major foreign policy issues continues highlighting growing divisions inside the Democratic Party over national security, military intervention, and Middle East policy.

The comments also come as tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States remain at the center of international concern amid ongoing nuclear negotiations, military operations, and growing fears of broader regional instability.
