GOSHEN – A total of 20 new police officers joined the long blue line in Orange and Sullivan counties as they graduated from the Orange County Police Academy on Thursday.
Three top law enforcement officials addressed the graduates.
Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler told the new officers that policing is a career and that their families should come first in their lives.
Sullivan County District Attorney Brian Conaty said these are challenging, but rewarding times, for members of the law enforcement community.
“With the current social climate, there is no more difficult time than being a police officer but there is no more important task or important role than the pursuit of justice,” he said. “We’re confident that the lessons and hard work installed upon you over the past few months will serve you well and guide you as you embark on this journey.”
Orange County Sheriff Paul Arteta also spoke saying, “each of you will wear a badge that symbolizes not only authority, but also profound responsibility.”
He said the new officers must not forget the importance of self-care.
Of the 20 new officers, 17 are men and three are women. They join agencies in villages, towns, cities and sheriff’s departments.
