NEWBURGH – Newburgh Free Academy North was placed in ‘hold in place’ at noon on Thursday after receiving texts claiming a student was in a bathroom armed with a gun.

It turned out the incident was a case of ‘swatting,’ or communicating about a fictitious incident resulting in a large police response.

City officials said a person was a texting in a suicide prevention chat application that he had just killed his siblings in Amhert, NY and was at NFA North.

Officers cleared all of the bathrooms with school security with negative results.

The name of the individual who communicated was checked through the school’s database with no known affiliation.

The hold in place was cleared following the search of the school.
