Donald Trump and Xi Jinping exchanged formal toasts Thursday evening during a state banquet in Beijing marking Trump’s historic visit to China.
The banquet concluded Trump’s first full day in China, which included an elaborate welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People and more than two hours of bilateral meetings between the two leaders.
During his remarks, Trump emphasized what he described as a long history of mutual respect between the American and Chinese people.
“The American and Chinese people share much in common,” Trump said during the banquet. “We value hard work. We value courage and achievement. We love our families, and we love our countries.”
Trump referenced historical connections between the two civilizations, noting that Benjamin Franklin published the sayings of Confucius during the colonial era and highlighted the presence of Confucius imagery at the Supreme Court of the United States.
He also referenced a Chinese memorial honoring George Washington that was later placed at the Washington Monument.
Trump said the relationship between the two nations provides “the foundation for a future that benefits both of our nations.”
“Together, we have the chance to draw on these values to create a future of greater prosperity, cooperation, and happiness, and peace for our children,” Trump stated.
At the conclusion of his toast, Trump formally invited Xi to visit the United States on Sept. 24.
“I’d now like to raise a glass and propose a toast to the rich and enduring ties between the American and Chinese people,” Trump said. “It’s a very special relationship.”
Xi, in his response, referenced the approaching 250th anniversary of American independence and praised what he described as the American spirit of patriotism and enterprise.
“This year is also the 250th anniversary of American independence,” Xi said. “The over 300 million American people are reinvigorating the spirit of patriotism, innovation, and enterprise.”
Xi also tied his remarks to broader themes of national revival and economic development.
“The people of China and the United States are both great peoples,” Xi stated. “Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand.”
Xi said the two countries could “help each other succeed and advance the well-being of the whole world.”
The banquet followed earlier discussions between the two leaders involving trade, artificial intelligence, Iran, Taiwan, energy security, and economic cooperation.
Trump’s visit to China marks the first trip by a sitting American president to Beijing in nearly a decade and comes amid heightened global tensions involving Taiwan, the Middle East, trade competition, and the global race for AI dominance.
Despite ongoing disputes between Washington and Beijing over military policy, semiconductor restrictions, tariffs, and regional security, both leaders presented the banquet as a symbol of continued diplomatic engagement between the world’s two largest economies.
