(SPEEDWAY, IN) – After months of speculation, the news was released this morning.
Katherine Legge is set to make motorsports history this May as she prepares to attempt the grueling Indy–Charlotte “Double”, becoming the first woman ever to compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. The bold effort places her among an elite group of drivers who have attempted the 1,100‑mile challenge—one of the most demanding feats in all of racing.
Legge, a veteran of open‑wheel and sports car racing, will take on the Indianapolis 500 in the No. 11 e.l.f. Cosmetics Chevrolet of HMD Motorsports with AJ Foyt Racing marking her return to the Brickyard with renewed determination. Immediately after completing the 500‑mile classic at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, she will board a helicopter and jet to Charlotte Motor Speedway to strap into a NASCAR Cup Series car for the 600‑mile night race in the No. 78 e.l.f. Cosmetics Chevrolet for Live Fast Motorsports.
“Very few drivers ever get the opportunity to attempt ‘The Double,’ and I do not take that opportunity lightly,” Legge said. “This challenge is about pushing through perceived limits, betting on yourself, taking risks and trying to do something unique. I am so incredibly grateful to e.l.f. for believing in what this moment represents and for building a community around it.”
While several drivers—including Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch, and Robby Gordon—have attempted the Double, none have been women. Legge’s effort represents a groundbreaking moment for motorsports and a powerful milestone for representation across both INDYCAR and NASCAR.
The Double demands extraordinary stamina. Drivers must endure:
- 1,100 miles of racing
- Over 10 hours in the cockpit
- Rapid transitions between two vastly different cars
- Intense heat, G‑forces, and mental fatigue
Legge has been preparing with a specialized training regimen focused on endurance, hydration, and rapid adaptation between driving styles.
The schedule leaves almost no margin for error.
- The Indianapolis 500 begins in the early afternoon.
- Upon finishing, Legge will be rushed to a helicopter, flown to a private jet, and transported to Charlotte.
- She is expected to arrive just in time for driver introductions or even start the Coca-Cola 600 from the back if delays occur.
Teams from both series are coordinating closely to ensure the transition is seamless.
Legge’s attempt has already generated excitement across the racing world. Fans and fellow drivers have praised her courage, determination, and willingness to push boundaries.
If successful, she will not only complete one of motor sport’s toughest challenges but also open the door for future generations of women to take on the Double.
As May is here, now all eyes will be on Katherine Legge—poised to make history, break barriers, and take on one of racing’s most iconic tests with grit and ambition.
