PUTNAM VALLEY – State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa spent part of her day Monday touring the Putnam Valley School District interacting with students and staff.
The commissioner visited each of the district’s three buildings. She highlighted Putnam Valley’s vision towards education and its implementation of learning that emphasizes the application of learning over the memorization of facts.
Rosa was impressed by the students she spoke with in each building and how they were taking ownership of their own learning.
Joined by former Putnam Valley Superintendent of Schools and current State Regent Fran Wills, Rosa commended the school family on the culture that exists within the district and the positive climate the schools can provide for students.
Superintendent Jeremy Luft described the commissioner’s visit as “an exciting opportunity to showcase how we are aligning instruction and student experiences to ensure our students graduate prepared, confident, and future-ready.”
He commended the “demanding work of our dedicated staff allowing Putnam Valley to receive recognition across New York State as a model district. Schools near and far are requesting visits to see our classrooms and learn from our instructional practices. The commissioner’s visit reflected this growing interest. She was eager to see firsthand the practices taking place in our schools and share those insights with other educational leaders.”
The last time a commissioner of Education visited Putnam Valley was in 2014 when then-Commissioner John King spent a day at the invitation of Wills.
During his tour, King liked what he saw in Putnam Valley calling it “very encouraging to see a school and a district where folks are committed to the professional development that teachers and principals need in order to be successful.”
King described Putnam Valley as a “small district but it has become a leader in quality educational programs not only regionally but across the state.”
