President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have strengthened their political relationship following their bruising 2024 presidential primary battle, according to a Wall Street Journal report, as allies and observers increasingly speculate about DeSantis’ future ambitions.
DeSantis, whose second term as Florida governor concludes next January, has continued fueling discussion about a possible return to presidential politics while also being mentioned for several potential roles in a future Trump administration.
The Journal reported that some DeSantis supporters have privately discussed the possibility of another White House campaign in 2028, while others have floated him for positions including attorney general or even a future Supreme Court nomination should an opening arise.
During a May 4 roundtable interview at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Los Angeles, DeSantis declined to rule out another presidential bid.
“Who knows? Like, you never know,” DeSantis said when asked about a future campaign.
The Florida governor pointed to his record in office while discussing his political future.
“Who took a state that had more Democrats than Republicans by 300,000 when he got elected, and now has 1.5 million more Republicans?” DeSantis said. “Who had a state that had a trillion-dollar economy and now has $1.8 trillion? Who has a state that had some school choice, now universal? A 50-year low in the crime rate?”
“So, we’ve got a good story to tell,” he added.
DeSantis entered the 2024 Republican presidential primary as one of Trump’s most prominent challengers but suspended his campaign after a disappointing performance in the Iowa caucuses.
Relations between the two Republicans later improved substantially following the conclusion of the primary contest.
Trump has since publicly referred to DeSantis as a friend and previously remarked that they have “blood that seems to match pretty well.”
According to the Journal, Trump recently told an associate that he appreciates DeSantis’ political performance in Florida and views the governor favorably.
Despite the renewed relationship between Trump and DeSantis, tensions reportedly remain unresolved between DeSantis and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
Wiles played a central role in DeSantis’ successful 2018 gubernatorial campaign but later split from the governor following a bitter dispute in 2019 involving alleged leaks and internal disagreements surrounding the administration.
The fallout permanently damaged the relationship, according to the report.
Longtime Trump adviser Roger Stone has also remained publicly critical of DeSantis, questioning the governor’s loyalty and political trustworthiness.
Speculation about DeSantis’ future intensified further after comments from Florida state Rep. Juan Carlos Porras, who characterized some of the governor’s recent political positioning as “political theater for a possible 2028 presidential run.”
DeSantis acknowledged the unpredictable nature of national politics during his comments to the Journal.
“Politics is fickle,” he said. “Things change.”
The governor’s next move remains uncertain as Republicans continue evaluating potential post-Trump leadership figures while Trump himself maintains a dominant position within the party.
