LIBERTY -Two New York City men were arrested Thursday after police said they stole a vehicle, attempted to burglarize a Liberty gas station, broke into a convenience store in Fallsburg, and later escaped police custody before one was recaptured.

Police said the crimes began around 1 a.m. when two masked men stole a vehicle from South Main Street in Liberty. The suspects then attempted to break into the Sunoco Country Store on Sullivan Avenue before driving to the Mobil gas station in Loch Sheldrake, where they allegedly forced their way inside and stole items, including a cash register.

Investigators identified the suspects as Jayvion Thompson, 18, and Sadiq Daugherty, 18, both of New York City.

Police arrested Thompson after a foot chase on North Main Street. During the pursuit, Liberty Police Sgt. Everett Saul suffered injuries and was treated at Garnet Health Medical Center Catskills

Daugherty was later arrested at an apartment on South Main Street, where police said they recovered evidence linked to the crimes.

Authorities said Thompson escaped from custody Thursday afternoon while being processed at Liberty police headquarters after slipping out of his handcuffs and fleeing through a secure door. Multiple agencies assisted in the search, and Thompson was found about an hour later hiding in an abandoned apartment on Chestnut Street.

Both men face burglary, criminal mischief and grand larceny charges. Thompson also was charged with assault, escape, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration. Police said he was also wanted on a parole absconder warrant.
