President Trump said he had a “great” discussion with Ursula von der Leyen regarding the Iran conflict and the future of trade relations between the United States and the European Union.
According to Trump, he convinced the European Commission President about the dangers of Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, warning that a regime accused of suppressing its own people could not be trusted with weapons capable of killing millions.
Trump also raised concerns over a major trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, accusing the EU of failing to fulfill its commitments under the deal.
“I had a great call with The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. We discussed many topics, including that we are completely united that Iran can never have a Nuclear Weapon. We agreed that a regime that kills its own people cannot control a bomb that can kill millions,” Trump said.
The conversation reportedly focused heavily on growing international concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Trump emphasized that both sides were united in preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power, describing it as a major global security threat.
Apart from the Iran issue, Trump shifted attention toward trade negotiations with the European Union. He referred to a “historic” trade deal that he claimed was agreed upon in Turnberry, saying the agreement included a commitment from the EU to reduce tariffs to zero.
However, Trump accused the European Union of delaying its promises and warned that the United States could respond with significantly higher tariffs if the agreement is not honored.
“I’ve been waiting patiently for the EU to fulfill their side of the Historic Trade Deal we agreed in Turnberry, Scotland, the largest Trade Deal, ever! A promise was made that the EU would deliver their side of the Deal and, as per Agreement, cut their Tariffs to ZERO,” Trump stated.
The US President further revealed that he has given the European Union a deadline until America’s 250th Independence anniversary in 2026 to implement the agreement.
“I agreed to give her until our Country’s 250th Birthday or, unfortunately, their Tariffs would immediately jump to much higher levels,” he added.
Trump’s remarks come amid renewed debates over global trade policies, rising geopolitical tensions with Iran, and ongoing economic disagreements between Washington and Brussels. His statement signals that trade and security issues are likely to remain central topics in US-European relations in the coming months.
