KINGSTON – The Ulster County Legislature is backing state legislation sponsored by Senator Michelle Hinchey (D, Saugerties) that would provide financial assistance to farmers whose crops caused significant losses due to severe weather.

The measure was prompted by last April’s weather when temperatures dropped into the low 20s causing damage to many crops.

County Legislator Laura Donovan of Marlborough, a town known for apple and other fruits, secured the backing of the state measure from the full county legislature.

“I think everyone understood the impact that, not only this event that we had now, but there was the other horrible frost a few years back. This going to be a continuing issue, especially for our small farmers, who don’t have crop insurance or for the specialty fruits and crops that don’t quality for crop insurance,” she said.

The Ulster lawmakers signed onto a memorandum of support for Hinchey’s measure.
