CARMEL – Over one-third of Putnam County’s population is over 65, contributing valuable knowledge and experience to the community.

During the county legislature’s meeting this week, May was officially designated as Older Americans Month.

Legislator William Gouldman said the county benefits when “people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds have the opportunity to participate and live independently.”

He also encouraged residents to build better opportunities for the county’s older residents by “transforming how society perceives and approaches aging as well as encouraging individuals to dispel misconceptions of aging.”

Most of all, Gouldman called on the public to “honor the contributions of older adults by helping them explore many opportunities for staying active and engaged as they age.”

Office for Senior Resources Director Marlene Barrett thanked Gouldman adding, “This year’s theme of ‘Champion Your Health’ serves to highlight aging trends while emphasizing the impact of meaningful interactions on the well-being and health of older adults throughout Putnam County.”

She encouraged “our seniors to make daily choices that support the body and mind with small consistent actions from preventative care to staying socially connected.”
