An unusual cloud formation displaying vivid rainbow-like colors was observed over Jonggol, Indonesia, drawing crowds and prompting widespread discussion after images and video circulated online.
Footage shared in a widely viewed social media clip shows large clouds streaked with bands of color, with onlookers stopping along roadways to record the scene. The display reportedly caused temporary traffic slowdowns as residents gathered to watch.
According to Indonesian meteorological officials, the phenomenon is consistent with known atmospheric optics. Ida Pramuwardani of the country’s meteorology agency said the colors occur when sunlight interacts with moisture in the air. “The phenomenon seen in the video is a common occurrence in the atmosphere and is related to atmospheric optics,” she said, according to reporting on the event.
“The rainbow colors appear because sunlight interacts with water droplets in the air, either from residual rain or rainfall occurring in other parts of the Sentul area,” she said. She added that cloud development in the region contributed to the visual effect, with portions of the formation partially obscured by larger cloud structures.
Officials said the occurrence does not indicate an imminent storm but may reflect localized atmospheric conditions, including the growth of convective clouds and the possibility of rainfall in nearby areas.
Additional footage from different angles, including another circulating video, shows the shifting colors across the cloud surface as lighting conditions change.
Despite the explanation from meteorologists, some social media users questioned the origin of the display. Posts accompanying several clips, including one shared online, suggested the colors resembled effects associated with artificial atmospheric activity.
