Donald Trump suggested the possibility of impeachment for Hakeem Jeffries after the Democratic leader criticized the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision on congressional redistricting.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump responded to Jeffries’ remarks describing the court as “illegitimate.” Trump wrote, “Hakeem Jeffries, a Low IQ individual, said our Supreme Court is ‘illegitimate.’ After saying such a thing, isn’t he subject to Impeachment?” He added, “I got impeached for A PERFECT PHONE CALL. Where are you Republicans? Why not get it started?” and “They’ll be doing this to me!”
Jeffries had issued a statement criticizing the Supreme Court’s ruling in a Louisiana redistricting case, arguing that the decision could weaken protections under the Voting Rights Act. He said the ruling “strikes a blow” to the law and could affect the ability of minority communities to elect preferred candidates.
“Today’s decision by this illegitimate Supreme Court majority … is designed to undermine the ability of communities of color all across this country,” Jeffries said, adding that the outcome was “unacceptable” but “not unexpected.”
The court’s ruling addresses how states may consider race when drawing congressional districts, an issue that has been the subject of multiple legal challenges nationwide. The decision is expected to influence future redistricting efforts and electoral dynamics across several states.
Trump’s comments introduce a new point of contention in the ongoing debate, as lawmakers from both parties continue to respond to the implications of the ruling.
