A missile strike in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region killed five people and injured others on Monday after an attack hit the town of Merefa, according to regional authorities.
Oleh Syniehubov, governor of the Kharkiv region, said the strike targeted civilian infrastructure located away from active front-line fighting. “Today during the day, the occupiers attacked civilian infrastructure of a town quite far from the front with a missile,” he said in a statement posted on Telegram.
Officials reported that two men and three women were killed in the incident. At least 18 individuals were injured, including four who were hospitalized in serious condition.
Authorities said the attack caused extensive damage across the area, impacting at least 10 residential buildings, an administrative facility, four retail shops, a vehicle repair site, and a food establishment.
Regional prosecutors indicated that the weapon used in the strike appeared to be an Iskander-type ballistic missile. Emergency response teams were deployed to the scene, where images released by services showed damaged structures, vehicles on fire, and rescue personnel assisting injured civilians.
There was no immediate response from Russia regarding the reported strike. Russian officials have previously denied deliberately targeting civilian areas during the ongoing conflict, which began with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The incident adds to continued hostilities in the region, with both sides reporting strikes in areas beyond the immediate front lines.
