German Chancellor Friedrich Merz moved to ease tensions with Donald Trump on Sunday, reaffirming Germany’s commitment to its partnership with the United States after a public disagreement over U.S. military actions targeting Iran.
In a statement posted to X, Merz emphasized the enduring strength of transatlantic ties, declaring that “the United States is and will remain Germany’s most important partner in the North Atlantic Alliance.” He added that both nations share a common objective: preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
Merz’s remarks followed pointed criticism from President Trump, who warned European leaders — including the German chancellor — against becoming overly involved in criticizing Washington’s approach to Iran. Trump reportedly expressed frustration with what he characterized as a lack of support from several NATO allies regarding U.S. military operations aimed at countering Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
According to reports, Trump indicated he is considering a significant reassessment of America’s military footprint in Europe. That review could include the potential withdrawal of U.S. troops stationed in Germany, as well as forces based in Spain and Italy — three NATO members he suggested had not sufficiently backed U.S. actions against Iran.
The diplomatic strain comes after Merz delivered remarks last week at a European Union event at the Carolus-Magnus-Gymnasium, where he criticized Iran’s leadership but also questioned the strategic clarity of the U.S. response. During his speech, Merz suggested that Iran appeared to be maneuvering skillfully in negotiations and raised concerns about the broader direction of American strategy in the region.
“An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by these so-called Revolutionary Guards,” Merz said, while also indicating uncertainty about the long-term objectives being pursued by Washington.
President Trump responded sharply on his social media platform, Truth Social, advising Merz to focus more on resolving the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and addressing domestic challenges within Germany. Trump suggested that European leaders should prioritize stabilizing their own regions rather than second-guessing U.S. decisions on Iran.
In addition to his comments directed at Merz, Trump shared articles highlighting the dispute and amplified broader discussions about European defense contributions and NATO burden-sharing. He also posted an interview featuring Matteo Salvini, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister, who praised Trump’s leadership and described his approach as providing “courage” and a strong cultural foundation for political and economic reform.
Despite the rhetorical escalation, Merz’s latest statement signals an effort to de-escalate the situation and reaffirm Germany’s role within NATO. By underscoring shared security goals — particularly the commitment to preventing a nuclear-armed Iran — the German chancellor appeared to be seeking common ground with Washington.
The episode highlights ongoing tensions within the transatlantic alliance over defense priorities, military strategy, and diplomatic engagement with adversaries.
While disagreements remain over tactics and burden-sharing, both Berlin and Washington continue to stress the importance of unity within NATO as geopolitical pressures mount in both the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
