Following the 2026 Hungarian parliamentary elections, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban offered to resign from his position as leader of the ruling Fidesz party, The Fidesz board rejected it for now, Hungarian news outlet Telex reported, citing party officials.

The Fidesz Party leader, who led his party to four landslide victories since 2010, lost to Peter Magyar and his right-of-center and pro-Brussels Tisza Party on Sunday, April 12, ending 16 years of Fidesz rule.

Earlier this week, Orban announced he would not seek re-election to the Hungarian National Assembly taking up his seat in parliament for the first time since 1990.

In an interview with Telex, MEP Tamas Deutsch said that Orban is ready to continue serving as Fidesz Party chief if the party’s congress backs him at a meeting in June.
