New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Tuesday that the city is facing a budget crisis of “historic magnitude,” calling for increased state assistance and new revenue measures to address a growing fiscal shortfall just months after taking office.
Speaking alongside City Council Speaker Julie Menin at City Hall, Mamdani outlined the administration’s plan to work with state officials to close what he described as a multi-billion-dollar deficit. According to a report from NBC New York, the mayor and council leadership are advocating for expanded state aid and policy changes, including a proposed $1 billion tax rollback.
“New York City faces a budget crisis of historic magnitude,” Mamdani said. “We’ve inherited a deficit larger than any since the Great Recession.”
Mamdani attributed the shortfall to what he described as years of financial mismanagement and chronic underbudgeting, as well as a structural imbalance in the fiscal relationship between New York City and the state government.
“We cannot close this deficit with savings alone. We need new revenue,” he said. “And we need a structural reset in our relationship with the State. That is the only way to meet our legal obligation to pass a balanced budget and to do so without imposing a financial burden into the backs of working people.”
The mayor also expressed support for extending the state’s budget deadline to June 12, stating that additional time is necessary to negotiate solutions to the financial gap.
The announcement comes as city officials work to finalize a balanced budget under legal requirements, with negotiations ongoing between municipal and state leaders over funding priorities and fiscal responsibilities.
