Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has reportedly reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to provide artificial intelligence capabilities for classified government use, according to a report citing a source familiar with the matter.

The arrangement would permit the Pentagon to use Google’s AI systems for “any lawful government purpose,” placing the company alongside other firms, including OpenAI and xAI, that have also entered into agreements to support classified operations.

Classified networks within the Defense Department are used for highly sensitive functions such as mission planning and weapons targeting. The reported agreement is part of a broader effort by the Pentagon to integrate advanced AI technologies into defense operations while maintaining flexibility in their application.

In 2025, the Defense Department signed agreements valued at up to $200 million each with several major AI developers, including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. These contracts aim to expand access to AI tools within secure environments.

According to the report, Google’s agreement includes provisions allowing the government to request adjustments to the company’s AI safety settings and content filters. The contract language states that the systems are “not intended for, and should not be used for, domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weapons (including target selection) without appropriate human oversight and control.” It also specifies that the agreement does not grant the company authority to restrict or override lawful government operational decisions.

The report has not been independently verified. Representatives from Alphabet and the Defense Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A spokesperson for Google Public Sector, the division responsible for government partnerships, indicated that the arrangement represents an amendment to an existing contract rather than a wholly new agreement.

Previous reporting has indicated that the Pentagon has encouraged leading AI developers to make their technologies available on classified networks with fewer restrictions than those typically applied to commercial users, as part of ongoing efforts to expand the role of artificial intelligence in national defense.
