Federal prosecutors on Monday charged a 31-year-old California man in connection with an armed incident at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, alleging he attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump.
Cole Tomas Allen appeared in court following the filing of charges by the Justice Department. According to reporting from the New York Times, Allen “appeared calm and quietly answered prompts from the judge, who told him he faced up to life in prison if convicted,” as detailed in coverage of the case.
Authorities allege Allen forced his way past a security checkpoint while armed, attempting to enter the ballroom where the dinner was underway and where Trump and administration officials were present. Investigators say his actions were premeditated, citing a written document he allegedly shared prior to the incident.
In that document, described as a manifesto and reported by the New York Post, Allen outlined specific targets within the administration. “Administration officials (not including Mr. Patel): they are targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest,” the text states. It also included language indicating a willingness to harm others in attendance if necessary to reach those targets.
Video footage circulating from the scene shows the suspect moving quickly through the hotel before law enforcement intervened. During the confrontation, officials said Allen discharged his weapon, striking a Secret Service agent in the chest. The agent survived due to wearing a protective vest. President Trump later stated the agent was doing “great.”
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche addressed the incident shortly afterward, indicating that additional charges were likely. He said the case would involve multiple counts tied to the shooting, firearm possession, and related offenses, adding that the charges would be “self-evident, given the conduct.”
President Trump also spoke during the same press conference, addressing the broader pattern of threats against him. “They don’t go after the ones that don’t do much, because they like it that way,” he said. “And when you look at the people that have either, whether it was an attempt or a successful attempt, they’re very impactful people. Just take a look at the names there, the big names. And I hate to say I’m honored by that.”
The incident follows a previous assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, during the 2024 campaign, when gunfire struck Trump’s ear as he addressed a crowd. Reflecting on that event at the National Prayer Breakfast, Trump said, “I turned to the right to look at the chart, and I said, ‘Wow. What was that? What was that?’ So, you never know, but God did that. I mean, it had to be.”
He added, “Honestly, it changed … something in me. I feel even stronger. I believed in God, but I feel much more strongly about it; something happened.”
After taking office, Trump told Americans he believed he had been “saved by God to Make America Great Again.”
The investigation into the Washington Hilton incident remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine evidence and determine the full scope of charges.
