First lady Melania Trump issued a sharp public rebuke of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel on Monday, accusing him of promoting “hateful and violent rhetoric” and calling on ABC and its parent company, The Walt Disney Company, to take a firm stance.

In a post on social media, the first lady criticized comments Kimmel made during a recent segment on his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, in which he mocked her appearance during a parody of the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

“You have a glow like an expectant widow,” Kimmel said during the segment—remarks that drew backlash from the first lady, who said the joke crossed a line.

Comments Come Amid Heightened Security Concerns

The controversy comes just days after a shooting incident near the Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, where Donald Trump, the first lady, and other top officials were present. A gunman opened fire outside the venue before being subdued by law enforcement, and investigators later revealed the suspect had expressed intent to target administration officials.

Against that backdrop, Melania Trump argued that Kimmel’s remarks were not only offensive but also irresponsible.

“His monologue about my family isn’t comedy,” she wrote. “It is corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America.”

She further accused the host of using humor as a shield for harmful commentary, adding that figures like Kimmel should not be given a platform to “spread hate” into people’s homes.

Call for Accountability From ABC

In her statement, the first lady directly challenged ABC’s leadership, suggesting the network has repeatedly allowed what she described as inappropriate behavior.

“A coward hides behind the network because he knows he will be protected,” she wrote. “Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand.”

Neither ABC nor its parent company immediately responded publicly to the criticism.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also addressed the issue during a briefing, questioning the tone of Kimmel’s remarks and calling them out of bounds.

History of Controversy Surrounding Kimmel

This is not the first time Kimmel’s commentary has drawn scrutiny. The host previously faced backlash over remarks related to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which led to a temporary suspension of his show. At the time, critics argued that his comments were premature and politically charged, as details about the suspect’s motives had not yet been confirmed.

Kimmel later returned to air with an emotional monologue, stating that he had no intention of making light of a tragic death and emphasizing that such violence was not a subject for humor.

Despite past controversies, Kimmel continues to host his show under a renewed contract with ABC, maintaining his position as one of the network’s leading late-night personalities.

Ongoing Concerns About Safety

The first lady’s response also reflects broader concerns about security and public rhetoric. According to sources close to her, Melania Trump has become increasingly focused on safety issues in recent years, particularly at high-profile public events.

Her concerns have been evident in public appearances and media projects, where she has openly questioned the risks associated with large gatherings and predictable public schedules.

In a recent interview, President Donald Trump praised his wife’s composure during the weekend’s security scare, describing her as calm, aware, and resilient under pressure.

A Broader Debate Over Comedy and Responsibility

The dispute highlights an ongoing national conversation about the boundaries of political comedy and the responsibilities of media figures. While late-night shows have long blended humor with political commentary, critics argue that certain remarks can contribute to division—especially during periods of heightened political tension.

Supporters of such programming, however, often defend it as a form of free expression and satire.

As the debate continues, the clash between the first lady and a prominent television host underscores the increasingly blurred lines between entertainment, politics, and public discourse in the United States.
