New details released by investigators outline a sequence of events leading up to the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where Donald Trump and senior administration officials were present before being evacuated by security.
Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California. According to federal law enforcement sources, Allen told investigators after his arrest that he intended to target members of the Trump administration.
Officials said Allen allegedly sent a manifesto to family members shortly before the incident. According to a New York Post report, the document included statements describing his intent to attack administration officials and contained anti-Trump rhetoric.
“Turning the other cheek is for when you yourself are oppressed,” Allen wrote in the document, according to the report. “I’m not the person raped in a detention camp… Turning the other cheek when someone else is oppressed is not Christian behavior; it is complicity in the oppressor’s crimes.”
The manifesto also identified “Administration officials… prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest” as targets and included language referring to the president.
Before the shooting, Allen’s brother reportedly contacted police in Connecticut to warn authorities about the manifesto and the potential threat. Investigators said the information was relayed prior to the incident.
Allen’s sister, Avriana Allen, later told investigators that her brother had become increasingly radical in his statements and had spoken about taking action to address perceived issues. She said he had acquired firearms, including two handguns and a shotgun, and practiced regularly at a shooting range.
Authorities also said Allen had connections to a group referred to as “The Wide Awakes” and had attended a protest event in California. His social media activity included anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric, officials said.
According to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, investigators believe Allen traveled by train from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., with a stop in Chicago. Blanche said the investigation is ongoing and additional details are expected as charges are finalized.
The shooting occurred Saturday night at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Law enforcement officials said Allen approached a Secret Service checkpoint armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives before opening fire.
A Secret Service agent was struck in a ballistic vest. Agents returned fire and subdued Allen at the scene. Both the suspect and the injured agent were transported to a hospital, and the agent is expected to recover.
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were evacuated along with Vice President JD Vance and other officials. The president later said the agent was “doing great” and praised the response of law enforcement.
“It does appear that he did, in fact, have set out to target folks that work in the administration, likely including the president,” Blanche said during a televised interview.
Trump later addressed the suspect’s writings during a phone interview, stating, “That guy is a sick guy… he hates Christians.”

Following the incident, federal and local authorities secured Allen’s residence in California as they prepared to execute a search warrant. Officials said the motive remains under investigation but indicated early findings point to a targeted attack on administration personnel.
The incident adds to prior security threats involving the president. Officials noted that Trump has previously survived two assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign.
