GOSHEN – The Orange County Legislature is joining neighboring Hudson Valley counties by enacting a temporary sales tax cap on gas.
The Rules Committee voted on Wednesday to cap the tax above $3 per gallon at the pump. At present, on average, gas has already exceeded $4 per gallon.
Committee member Stephen Hunter said it is about regional competition.
“Our neighbors in Dutchess, Ulster, Putnam and Rockland have all already moved to provide their residents with relief by implementing sales tax caps, so if we do not follow suit with implementing one here in Orange County, we really risk losing a lot more money than just the portion we are talking about today; that tax on the additional dollar,” he said.
The measure would kick in on June 1 and extend through March 1, 2027.
Hunter noted that during COVID-19, the county temporarily capped local sales tax on gas over $2 per gallon.
