Artificial intelligence company OpenAI is preparing to commit as much as $1.5 billion to a new joint venture backed by major private equity firms, signaling an aggressive push to expand its presence in the fast-growing enterprise AI market.
The initiative, internally known as DeployCo, is expected to play a central role in accelerating the adoption of OpenAI’s workplace and business-focused tools. According to reports, the company will initially invest $500 million in equity, with the joint venture targeting a valuation of around $10 billion in a funding round anticipated to close in early May.
Structured as a Delaware-based limited liability company, DeployCo is designed to help scale OpenAI’s enterprise offerings by working closely with large corporations and institutional clients. The move reflects a broader strategy to embed AI tools deeper into everyday business operations, from productivity software to advanced automation systems.
OpenAI is expected to retain significant control over the venture through super-voting shares, ensuring it maintains strategic direction despite the involvement of multiple financial backers. The arrangement highlights the company’s intent to balance outside investment with long-term control over its technology deployment.
The joint venture has reportedly attracted strong interest from leading private equity firms, including TPG, Bain Capital, Advent International, Brookfield, and Goanna Capital. These investors are expected to contribute a combined $4 billion to the project.
As part of the investment structure, private equity participants will commit funds over a five-year period, with OpenAI reportedly guaranteeing an annual return of 17.5%. This relatively high return target underscores both the perceived growth potential of enterprise AI and the competitive environment for securing large-scale funding.
In addition to its initial $500 million investment, OpenAI is said to have the option to inject a further $1 billion into DeployCo at a later stage, depending on the venture’s growth and capital needs. This flexible funding approach allows the company to scale its commitment alongside demand for its enterprise solutions.
The move comes amid intensifying competition in the enterprise AI space. OpenAI has recently ramped up efforts to win corporate clients, a segment where rival Anthropic is widely regarded as having gained stronger early traction. Enterprise adoption is seen as a critical battleground, as large organizations increasingly drive spending on advanced software and artificial intelligence tools.
Private equity firms, which often have significant influence over large portfolios of companies, are becoming key partners in this expansion. By collaborating with these firms, OpenAI can potentially accelerate adoption across a wide network of businesses, embedding its AI solutions at scale.
The planned investment in DeployCo reflects a broader shift in the AI industry, where companies are moving beyond consumer-facing applications and focusing on enterprise integration as a primary growth engine. With substantial capital backing and a clear strategic focus, OpenAI is positioning itself to compete more aggressively in a market that is expected to define the next phase of AI adoption globally.
