Lori Chavez-DeRemer has resigned from her position as U.S. Labor Secretary following mounting allegations of misconduct, stepping down as a federal investigation into her conduct neared its conclusion. Her departure marks another high-profile exit from Donald Trump’s cabinet during a period of political turbulence.
The White House confirmed that Keith Sonderling, her deputy, will assume the role of acting secretary while a replacement is considered.
In a brief statement, Chavez-DeRemer said she would be leaving public service but intended to continue advocating for workers in the private sector. Her resignation comes as the Labor Department’s inspector general wraps up a months-long probe triggered by whistleblower complaints alleging professional misconduct.
According to the allegations under investigation, Chavez-DeRemer was accused of engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a member of her security detail and misusing departmental resources for personal travel. She was expected to be formally interviewed by investigators in the coming days, suggesting the inquiry had reached a critical stage before her resignation.
Her exit adds to a growing list of recent cabinet changes. Kristi Noem was removed from her role at the US Department of Homeland Security in March, while Pam Bondi stepped down shortly afterward as attorney general. These developments have fueled speculation about a broader reshuffling within the administration, reportedly driven in part by political pressures linked to ongoing foreign policy challenges.
Chavez-DeRemer had assumed leadership of the United States Department of Labor in March 2025 after serving two years in Congress. Her nomination had initially drawn bipartisan backing in the Senate, with support from major labor organizations including the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the AFL-CIO. At the time, these groups praised her track record on workers’ rights and union support.
However, her tenure quickly became overshadowed by controversy. In addition to the allegations against her personally, reports indicated that senior members of her team, including her chief of staff and deputy chief of staff, had resigned amid related concerns.
Further scrutiny came from claims that Chavez-DeRemer and some aides had sent inappropriate messages and made questionable requests to younger staff members, adding to concerns about workplace conduct within the department.
Labor leaders have responded cautiously to her departure, emphasizing the need for leadership that prioritizes workers’ interests and maintains professional standards. The situation has also renewed attention on accountability within federal agencies and the role of oversight bodies such as inspectors general.
As the investigation concludes and the administration considers a permanent replacement, the Labor Department faces the challenge of restoring stability and trust while continuing to address key issues affecting American workers.
