WASHINGTON – A bipartisan measure to allow taxpayers to eliminate taxes and state-mandated surcharges, including their gas and electric bills, has been introduced by Congressman Josh Riley (D, NY-19) and Congressman Jeff Van Drew (R, NJ-02).
The No Taxes on Utility Bills Act would allow taxpayers to deduct all taxes and state-mandated surcharges on utility bills, including gas and electric bills, would apply to both residential and small business ratepayers, and take effect for taxable years beginning after the bill is enacted.
“Families across Upstate New York are struggling just to keep the lights and heat on,” said Riley, who district includes all of Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Sullivan, Tioga, Tompkins, Chenango and Broome counties, and parts of ulster and Otsego, called it “an emergency, and we need to treat it like one.”
According to , taxes and state-mandated surcharges accounted for nearly $100 of a $250 Upstate utility bill. Under Riley’s and Van Drew’s plan, taxpayers would be able to deduct that full amount.
