The United States Senate on Wednesday voted down another effort to restrict President Donald Trump’s military authority in Iran, marking the fourth unsuccessful attempt to advance a war powers resolution since the conflict began.

The measure, introduced by Tammy Duckworth, failed in a 47–52 vote. According to CBS News, the motion sought to discharge the resolution from committee and bring it forward for consideration.

The proposal would have directed the president “to remove the United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against Iran, unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or a specific authorization for use of military force.”

Voting patterns again reflected divisions across party lines. Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, joined Democrats in supporting the resolution, while John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, voted with Republicans to oppose it.

Democrats have repeatedly pushed for votes on the issue since the start of hostilities on Feb. 28, arguing that congressional authorization is required for continued military engagement. Republican lawmakers have largely opposed the measure, maintaining that it would constrain executive authority during an active conflict.

A similar resolution considered last month also failed in the Senate, receiving a 47–53 vote. As with the latest attempt, Paul broke with his party to support limiting presidential authority, while Fetterman again sided with Republicans to block the measure.

The repeated votes underscore ongoing debate in Congress over the scope of presidential war powers and the role of lawmakers in authorizing military action.

With the latest defeat, no legislative limits on the administration’s authority in Iran have advanced, though Democratic lawmakers have indicated they intend to continue pursuing the issue.
