Speaker cites “indisputable” evidence as pressure mounts following indictment and ethics investigation.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday that he expects the House of Representatives will move to expel Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick following findings by the chamber’s Ethics Committee.

“I do think certainly on Cherfilus-McCormick, the Ethics Committee has gone through all of its processes, and they found some alarming facts,” Johnson said in remarks reported here. “I think the facts are indisputable at this point, and so I believe it’ll be the consensus of this body that she should be expelled. I mean, that certainly rises to the level that’s needed.”

Cherfilus-McCormick has been accused of embezzling $5 million in disaster relief funds and faces a federal indictment related to the allegations. In late March, the House Ethics Committee announced it had identified what it described as “clear and convincing” evidence supporting the claims, intensifying calls for her resignation or removal.

Johnson’s comments come as multiple members of Congress face separate controversies. Reps. Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales have both announced plans to resign amid unrelated scandals. Meanwhile, Rep. Cory Mills has also faced calls to step down.

Expulsion from the House requires a two-thirds vote, and while rare, it is considered the most severe disciplinary action available to the chamber. Lawmakers have not yet scheduled a formal vote on Cherfilus-McCormick’s status, but Johnson indicated that support for removal appears to be building.
