TOWN OF WALLKILL- Construction is now underway on a major infrastructure upgrade in the Town of Wallkill that will replace the aging bridge carrying State Route 17 over Route 17K. The price tag for the project is $17 million.
The existing 68-year-old structure is being replaced with a modern, single-span bridge designed to improve safety and better serve the region’s growing population. The corridor is a key route through one of the fastest-developing areas of the state, making the upgrade a significant investment in both transportation and economic growth.
“New Yorkers deserve quality roads and bridges to get where they need to go safely and efficiently,” Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement. “By replacing this aging bridge along State Route 17, we will ensure continued smooth travel along one of the most important transportation corridors in the state.”
One of the most notable improvements will be increased clearance. The new bridge will stand 16 feet, eight inches above Route 17K, two feet higher than the current span, helping reduce the risk of collisions with over-height vehicles. The structure will also feature a jointless deck, which is expected to minimize noise, lower maintenance needs, and provide a smoother ride for motorists.
Drivers traveling through the area should be prepared for lane shifts and occasional daily lane closures during construction. The project is expected to be completed by late 2027.
