House Speaker accuses Democrats of political motivations as discussions emerge over potential removal mechanisms

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday sharply criticized congressional Democrats over renewed discussions about invoking the 25th Amendment against President Donald J. Trump, accusing them of pursuing removal efforts rather than advancing policy initiatives.

In a press release, Johnson said Democrats were focused on what he described as repeated attempts to remove Trump from office, contrasting those efforts with what he characterized as a lack of concern during the presidency of Joe Biden. “None of them breathed a word about the 25th Amendment when they were lying every day to cover up for the dangerous infirmity of President Joe Biden,” Johnson said.

Johnson argued that Democrats were prioritizing impeachment and other extraordinary measures despite recent foreign policy developments, including a ceasefire agreement involving Iran following U.S. military action. He described Democratic leadership as lacking direction, stating, “Congressional Democrats have no message, no vision, and no leadership,” and added that their actions were driven by “an irrational hatred” of Trump.

The speaker also said Democrats were neglecting legislative priorities such as tax policy, wages and public safety, while focusing on what he called their “favorite failed and pointless pastime: impeaching President Trump.”

His remarks come as Democratic leadership in the House has begun taking steps to examine constitutional options related to Trump’s tenure. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has authorized a briefing led by Rep. Jamie Raskin to review potential mechanisms for removal, including the 25th Amendment.

The discussions follow increasing calls from Democratic lawmakers, with more than 80 members of the House and at least two senators publicly supporting either impeachment proceedings or urging Vice President JD Vance and Cabinet officials to consider invoking the 25th Amendment.

Reports indicate Democratic leadership had previously resisted such actions but is now facing mounting pressure from within the party, particularly after recent statements by Trump related to Iran policy. While some Democrats have suggested public support may be shifting toward stronger action, others have expressed doubts privately about whether such efforts would succeed.

Johnson framed the push as politically motivated, asserting that it does not reflect voter priorities. He pointed to polling showing low approval ratings for the Democratic Party and said the focus on Trump highlights what he described as an absence of a broader policy agenda.

“Democrats are attempting to once again invalidate the votes of tens of millions of Americans,” Johnson said, adding that Trump was “overwhelmingly elected” and is implementing policies aimed at strengthening the country.

He also reiterated what he described as a double standard, noting that Democrats had not previously raised similar concerns about Biden’s fitness for office. “Not one of these Democrats breathed a word about the 25th Amendment,” Johnson said.

As House Democrats prepare further discussions and potential symbolic actions related to Trump’s policies, Republicans have indicated they intend to oppose such measures and maintain focus on their legislative priorities.

With tensions increasing between the parties, Johnson said the political divide would become more evident in upcoming elections. “The midterm election will be a contrast between common sense and crazy,” he said, describing Democratic priorities as “deranged.”
