MID-HUDSON – Six Democratic candidates challenging Republican Hudson Valley Congressman Michael Lawler (R, NY-17) have filed petitions with the New York State Board of Elections that will result in a crowded June primary battle.

The sextet includes Rockland County Legislator Beth Davidson, Army veteran Cait Conley, Tarrytown Village Trustee Effie Phillips-Staley, Briarcliff Deputy Mayor Peter Chatzky, former journalist Mike Sacks and Air Force veteran John Cappello.

Each of the candidates collected a minimum of 1,250 signatures to run in the June 23 primary.

The 17th Congressional District encompasses all of Putnam and Rockland counties in addition to sections of Westchester and Dutchess and is considered as a ‘toss-up’ by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.

Lawler is serving his second term as congressman.
