ALBANY – State officials are reminding drivers that keeping your license plate clear is more than just a courtesy; it’s the law. Under New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, any material that covers or obscures the numbers or letters on a plate is illegal, including trailer hitches.

Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty says unlawful practices are a danger to the public.

“There’s been a couple of high-profile hit-and-run cases where the vehicle involved had an obstructed plate and made the identification of that vehicle difficult.”

So-called ghost cars are evading tolls by purposely peeling the plate numbers or bending them so that the numbers can’t be read.

“Then you have the issue where they might have a trailer hitch with bicycle racks on the back that obstruct the plates. These all contribute to an enforcement problem,” he said.

The bottom line is to make sure both your front and rear plates are legible at all times to avoid a ticket.,
