High court order sends case back to appeals court as administration moves to drop charges tied to congressional subpoenas.

The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for efforts to dismiss the criminal contempt case against former presidential adviser Steve Bannon, issuing an unsigned order that returns the matter to a lower court for further review.
In its order, the court did not provide an explanation for its decision, and no justices publicly dissented.
The ruling directs the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to reconsider the case as it evaluates a pending motion seeking dismissal of the indictment.
Bannon was previously convicted of contempt of Congress after refusing to comply with congressional subpoenas and served a four-month prison sentence in 2024. The case stemmed from his failure to provide testimony and documents requested by a congressional investigation.
Both Bannon and the Trump administration have since moved to have the case dismissed, prompting the legal challenge that reached the Supreme Court.
The high court’s action does not resolve the case but allows the appeals court to proceed with consideration of whether the charges should be formally dropped.
