President Donald Trump’s fiscal year 2027 budget proposal includes provisions aimed at reversing firearm regulations implemented during the previous administration while expanding federal efforts to defend Second Amendment rights.

Details outlined in the administration’s budget proposal describe a policy framework centered on what the document characterizes as the protection of constitutional liberties. Within the proposal, a section labeled “Protects the Constitutional Rights of American Citizens” states, “The Budget affirms the President’s commitment to definitively protect the Second Amendment and other constitutional rights of citizens.”

The proposal allocates $1.4 million to establish a new office within the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division dedicated specifically to Second Amendment enforcement. According to the document, the office would focus on addressing what it describes as unlawful infringements on the right to bear arms and pursuing legal cases intended to reinforce those protections.

The budget also addresses federal firearm regulations enacted during the administration of former President Joe Biden, identifying several policies the current administration seeks to reverse. The document states that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives would continue efforts to undo rules that it describes as having “effectively criminalized law-abiding gun ownership.”

Among the measures cited are expanded background check requirements, registration rules related to pistol braces, restrictions affecting privately made firearms, and enforcement actions involving the revocation of Federal Firearms Licenses. The proposal asserts that these policies placed additional legal burdens on gun owners and could expose individuals to criminal penalties.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, referenced in the proposal as a key enforcement agency, would play a central role in implementing any regulatory changes stemming from the budget framework.

Advocacy organizations have responded to the proposal. In a statement shared on social media, Gun Owners of America said the budget “affirms Trump’s pro-2A agenda.”

The budget proposal outlines policy priorities but would require congressional approval to take effect. Lawmakers are expected to review the proposed changes as part of the broader federal budget process.
