During a Thursday appearance on Chris Jansing Reports on MSNBC, Representative Seth Moulton (D-MA) delivered sharp criticism of President Donald Trump over the administration’s handling of U.S. military operations in Iran.
Moulton alleged that the president’s recent actions and rhetoric signal a dangerous escalation and accused him of endorsing tactics that amount to war crimes.
Speaking candidly, Moulton claimed that some active-duty Marines have taken to referring to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s leadership at the Pentagon as the “Department of War Crimes.”
According to Moulton, this characterization stems from what he described as the deliberate targeting and destruction of civilian infrastructure—actions he argued are clear violations of international law.
“To be absolutely clear,” Moulton said, “destroying civilian infrastructure is a war crime. It is designed to harm civilians, not enemy combatants.” He drew parallels between the alleged U.S. actions and the conduct long condemned by American officials in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
For years, U.S. leaders have criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for attacking civilian areas, including cities and electrical power facilities in Ukraine. Moulton argued that calling for or carrying out similar tactics would undermine America’s moral standing on the global stage.
He further asserted that President Trump lacks a coherent strategy to bring the conflict with Iran to a close. Instead, Moulton claimed, the administration is reacting impulsively to mounting challenges.
“This is a war of choice,” he said, suggesting that the president initiated the conflict without a clear endgame and is now struggling to contain its fallout.
Moulton also pointed to broader geopolitical and economic consequences. He noted that just months ago, the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz remained open, ensuring stable global oil shipments and relatively lower fuel prices.
Now, he said, disruptions in the region have contributed to rising oil costs and heightened global tensions. He criticized the president for reportedly seeking assistance from China to help stabilize shipping lanes, characterizing the move as a sign of weakened U.S. leverage.
In a striking metaphor, Moulton described the situation as “kicking a hornet’s nest” without a clear plan for escape. “He’s got his foot stuck in it, and he doesn’t know how to get out,” Moulton said, arguing that escalating military tactics will only deepen the crisis rather than resolve it.
Concluding his remarks, the Massachusetts congressman called the current approach “an embarrassment,” warning that actions perceived as violations of international law could have lasting repercussions for U.S. credibility, alliances, and national security.
The remarks underscore the growing political divide in Washington over the administration’s Iran strategy and raise broader questions about the legal and ethical boundaries of modern warfare.
