MID-HUDSON – With the opening of trout season Wednesday, anglers by the dozens headed to bodies of water throughout the region in search of their prized catch.
Two fishermen were observed waist-deep in the East Branch of the Croton River in Southeast.
Jim, who resides in Putnam Valley, made his annual pilgrimage across the county because “I normally get a few half-way decent-sized trout each year.”
Several hundred yards away was fisherman Tony from Brewster who also said he enjoyed the fishing spot because of the number of bites he gets.
Statewide fishing regulations allow for the taking of any sized Brook, Brown and Rainbow Trout along with Splake with a daily limit of five from April 1 through October 15.
It’s also open season for Lake Trout. Anglers, however, must return fish if they do not measure 21 inches long. DEC law mandates the maximum daily limit of three Lake Trout per fisherman.
One of the Hudson Valley’s premier anglers is Putnam Legislator Nancy Montgomery. In her spare time, Montgomery, who represents constituents in Putnam Valley and Philipstown, enjoys the outdoors— especially fishing.
Montgomery recently caught a couple of magnificent brown trout on the Missouri River in Craig, Montana.
“It was a great trip,” she said adding, “Honestly, nothing compares to fishing in New York State. I love New York.”
Montgomery, by the way, has been accepted as the first female member of the Wintoon Fly Fishing Club on the Neversink River in the Catskills.
