SpaceX has filed confidential paperwork with U.S. regulators, positioning the company for what could become the largest initial public offering in history, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission allows the company, led by Elon Musk, to move forward with plans to list shares on a public exchange, with reports indicating a potential timeline as early as July.
Estimates cited in media reports suggest the offering could raise more than $75 billion, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 by Saudi Aramco, which generated $25.6 billion.
If realized, the IPO could value SpaceX at more than $1.75 trillion, placing it among the largest publicly traded companies globally by market capitalization. The company was previously valued at approximately $1.25 trillion following its acquisition of xAI earlier this year.
The confidential nature of the filing allows SpaceX to prepare its offering without immediately disclosing detailed financial data. However, once public documents are released, they are expected to provide deeper insight into the company’s revenue streams, including its rocket launch business and its Starlink network.
Analysts say the move to go public could introduce new pressures on the company to prioritize profitability and transparency, particularly as it balances commercial operations with long-term projects such as developing spacecraft for missions to Mars.
Market observers note strong investor interest in both space technology and artificial intelligence, factors that could support demand for the offering even amid broader economic uncertainty tied to geopolitical tensions.
Strategists cited continued enthusiasm for Musk-led ventures, with some suggesting the company could attract significant capital regardless of market conditions due to its dominant position in satellite launches and expanding role in communications infrastructure.
SpaceX is privately held, with ownership shared among Musk, investment funds, and major technology firms including Alphabet Inc.. Its reusable rocket systems have significantly reduced the cost of launching payloads into orbit, contributing to its leadership in the global space launch market.
The company has also expanded into artificial intelligence through its integration of xAI, part of a broader strategy that includes plans to deploy satellite-based data infrastructure to support future AI systems.
Other major artificial intelligence firms, including OpenAI and Anthropic, are also reportedly considering public offerings, signaling a potential wave of high-profile IPOs in the technology sector.
Neither SpaceX nor federal regulators publicly commented on the filing.
