White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday that President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of asking Gulf nations to contribute financially to the ongoing war with Iran, as the conflict enters its fifth week.

During a press briefing, Leavitt responded to a question referencing past cost-sharing arrangements during the First Gulf War, when several Arab nations helped finance U.S. military operations. She indicated that similar discussions could emerge in the current conflict.
“I think it’s something the president would be quite interested in calling them to do. I won’t get ahead of him on that. But certainly, it’s an idea that he has, and I think you’ll hear more from him on,” Leavitt said, according to remarks shared in a video clip.
The briefing comes as U.S. officials continue diplomatic efforts alongside ongoing military operations tied to the conflict with Iran. Leavitt’s comments reflect consideration within the administration of how to manage the financial burden of extended operations.
Relations between the United States and Gulf nations have faced strain in recent weeks, particularly following Iranian strikes targeting infrastructure in countries hosting U.S. military assets. Those developments followed the initial U.S.-Israeli operations that began the current phase of the conflict.
Despite tensions, Gulf states remain strategically important partners in the region, and any discussions regarding financial contributions would likely be tied to broader negotiations over security cooperation and regional stability.
The administration has not announced any formal agreement or request related to funding, but officials indicated that discussions on multiple aspects of the conflict—including diplomatic engagement and operational support—are ongoing.
