Wei Kan, founder of consulting firm Conduit Asia and a former brand director for Nike Greater China, said recent marketing efforts indicate that Nike is beginning to adapt its messaging to better connect with Chinese consumers.
According to Kan, one example of this shift was a Chinese New Year marketing campaign that resonated strongly with local audiences by incorporating humor and cultural references that felt familiar to consumers in China. The campaign reflected a more localized approach to advertising, rather than relying solely on global branding messages.
Kan explained that the long-running “Just Do It” slogan worked well during periods when China’s economy was expanding rapidly and consumer optimism was high. During those years of strong economic growth, the motivational message aligned with the national mood of ambition and confidence.
However, he said the situation has changed in recent years. Economic uncertainty, slower growth, and changing consumer attitudes have altered how marketing messages are received in China. In that environment, inspirational slogans that emphasize bold action and individual drive may not resonate as strongly as they once did.
“When everything is booming, the ‘Just Do It’ message fits with the mood,” Kan said, noting that it matched the sense of momentum that many Chinese consumers once felt.
“But over the past few years, it hasn’t been a good fit for how people in China are feeling,” he added.
Kan said brands operating in China increasingly need to adjust their messaging to reflect current social and economic realities. Campaigns that incorporate local culture, humor, and everyday experiences are often more effective at connecting with audiences than global slogans alone.
The shift highlights the growing importance for international companies to tailor their marketing strategies to regional audiences, particularly in a large and complex market like China where consumer sentiment can change quickly in response to economic conditions and cultural trends.
