MAHOPAC – Dozens of veterans gathered Sunday at the Mahopac VFW Hall to remember the sacrifices made by members of the military during the Vietnam War.

County Executive Kevin Byrne told those in attendance, “We come together to recognize and thank the brave men and women who served our nation during the Vietnam War. Their courage, sacrifice, and service deserve our lasting gratitude. Not just today, but every day.”

National Vietnam War Veterans Day is commemorated each year on March 29.

Earlier, State Senator Peter Harckham and Assemblyman Matt Slater, who both represent constituents in sections of Putnam and Northern Westchester, invited those who served in Vietnam to Albany for a day at the capitol.

Harckham said the event honored a “group of veterans who never got the welcome home they deserved,” while Slater added, “It was great to spend time with them and offer our admiration and gratitude for their service.”

In his remarks, Harckham noted that more than three million Americans served their country in the Vietnam War, and over 58,000 sacrificed their lives.

Other lawmakers greeting the Vietnam heroes were Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Senators Shelley Mayer and Rob Rolison and Assemblywoman Dana Levenberg.
