Twelve Americans were injured when an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack struck Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on Friday, according to multiple U.S. officials.

Two of the injured service members were reported in serious or critical condition, while the remaining ten sustained lighter injuries, including possible concussions and blast-related trauma.

The strike, which occurred earlier on March 27, 2026, targeted the strategically important base that hosts U.S. Air Force assets supporting operations in the region. At least one KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft was hit and reportedly caught fire or sustained significant damage, with reports indicating that multiple refueling planes—possibly two or more—were affected. Some accounts also mentioned potential damage to other aircraft, including surveillance platforms, though details on the full extent of the material losses remain limited as assessments continue.

The assault combined Iranian ballistic missiles with drones, marking one of the more serious breaches of defenses at the heavily protected installation during the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. Prince Sultan Air Base, located in central Saudi Arabia, has served as a key hub for American air operations, including refueling missions that extend the reach of coalition aircraft. This incident is not the first time the base has come under Iranian fire; a prior attack earlier in March resulted in at least one American fatality.

U.S. officials described the injuries as ranging from serious to minor, with the two critically wounded personnel receiving immediate medical attention. The attack highlights vulnerabilities in forward-deployed U.S. positions even as American and allied forces conduct strikes against Iranian targets. It comes amid a broader escalation that has seen increased Iranian attempts to target regional bases hosting U.S. troops.

The incident adds to the growing casualty count for American forces in the monthlong conflict. Officials have not yet released the names of the injured, and investigations into how the combined missile-drone barrage penetrated defenses are underway. Damage to the KC-135 tankers is particularly notable, as these aircraft are vital for sustaining long-range air operations and refueling fighters and bombers over contested airspace.

This development occurs against a backdrop of fluctuating statements from the Trump administration regarding the pace and duration of operations against Iran. While some U.S. leaders have projected a swift resolution, the strike on Prince Sultan Air Base underscores that Iranian capabilities for long-range precision attacks persist despite sustained coalition efforts. Saudi authorities have not issued immediate public comments, but the base operates with close coordination between U.S. and Saudi forces.
