Aryna Sabalenka delivered a commanding performance under pressure to defeat Coco Gauff in a gripping three-set final at the Miami Open on Saturday, securing a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory and further cementing her dominance at the top of the women’s game.
The world No. 1 showcased her trademark power and composure across the two-hour, 11-minute contest, overpowering the fourth-ranked Gauff in the opening and deciding sets with a barrage of precise, high-velocity groundstrokes. With the win, Sabalenka not only claimed back-to-back Miami Open titles but also etched her name into an elite category of players who have completed the coveted “Sunshine Double” — winning both Indian Wells and Miami in the same season — a feat last achieved by Iga Swiatek in 2022.
The final unfolded in front of a passionate home crowd that rallied behind Gauff, a South Florida native, hoping to see her capture the biggest title of her career on familiar ground. However, Sabalenka’s relentless aggression proved decisive, particularly in the first set, where she broke early and dictated rallies with authority, taking it 6-2.
Gauff responded with resilience in the second set, raising her level and feeding off the crowd’s energy. She steadied her serve and capitalized on key moments to level the match at one set apiece, injecting fresh intensity into the contest and raising hopes of a comeback victory.
But Sabalenka quickly regained control in the third set, breaking Gauff in the opening game after a sequence that included a double fault and an unforced error from the American. On break point, Sabalenka delivered a crushing backhand winner that set the tone for the remainder of the set. From there, she maintained her composure, absorbing pressure while continuing to strike with precision from the baseline.
The match ultimately ended with Gauff being broken for the fourth time, her wide backhand sealing the outcome in Sabalenka’s favor. Despite the loss, Gauff demonstrated flashes of brilliance throughout the match, though her inconsistency on serve — including seven double faults — proved costly. Sabalenka, by contrast, delivered a near-flawless serving performance, committing no double faults.
The victory marked the 24th professional title of Sabalenka’s career and gave her a narrow 7-6 edge in her head-to-head record against Gauff, underscoring the competitive nature of their growing rivalry.
Speaking during the trophy ceremony, Sabalenka acknowledged her opponent’s impact on her own development, praising Gauff for pushing her to improve. She also expressed appreciation for the vibrant atmosphere created by the crowd, noting the consistently packed stadium and energetic support throughout the tournament.
Gauff, addressing the fans after the match, admitted disappointment at falling short but emphasized the positives from her week-long run. She credited the crowd for their unwavering support, which she said energized her performances and made the tournament a memorable experience despite the defeat.
Among those in attendance was Kai Trump, a golfer at the University of Miami, who had earlier shared a photo with Sabalenka on social media during the tournament.
Sabalenka had entered the final expressing satisfaction at seeing Gauff rediscover top form at her home event, where she had previously struggled to progress beyond the fourth round. In the end, however, it was Sabalenka who rose to the occasion once again, reinforcing her status as the player to beat on the WTA Tour.
